What To Do If You Forget Your Ostomy Supplies While Traveling

A Moment I Will Never Forget

Back in 2020, I filmed a video about something that every ostomate fears but few talk about. I had forgotten my ostomy supplies while traveling. At the time, I was newer to life with my ostomy and still figuring out what needed to travel with me, what could stay home, and how to organize everything.

I had packed quickly. I thought I was prepared. And then suddenly, miles from home, I realized I didn’t have what I needed. That moment of panic is something almost everyone in this community experiences at some point. It is scary, frustrating, and overwhelming.

But here is the truth I learned that day, and even more so in the years since. You are never stuck, you always have options and forgetting supplies does not have to ruin your trip.

Traveling More Has Taught Me A Lot

Since that first video in 2020, I have traveled extensively. Long flights. Weekend trips. Cross-country work travel. Family vacations. Day trips. And with every experience, I have learned what helps the most when you forget something, what to always carry, and how to stay calm.

Traveling with an ostomy is absolutely possible, and it can be enjoyable and stress free once you have your systems in place. But even now, after years of experience, I still double check my supplies before every trip. Some habits stay with you because you only need to forget something once to decide it is never happening again.

If You Ever Forget Your Supplies,

Start Here

Here are the steps I recommend if you suddenly discover you do not have what you need.

Stay calm.
This is the most important step. You will find a solution.

Check your purse, pockets, car, or any travel bag.
Sometimes something is tucked away without you realizing it.

Call your manufacturer.
Hollister, Convatec, and Coloplast often know local suppliers and can help direct you to nearby locations.

Find a local medical supply store.
Most cities have emergency options, and many will let you purchase individual pieces.

Look for a hospital or urgent care center.
They often have supplies on hand and may give you enough to get through your trip.

Ask another ostomate if you are at a conference or event.
This community always shows up for each other.

You have more options than you think, even when it feels like the world is closing in.

What I Carry With Me Now

After years of travel, here are the things that never leave my bag.

• Two extra flanges
• Two extra bags
• Wipes
• Scissors
• Doggy bags
• A small travel mirror
• A washcloth or folded paper towel
• A mini version of my regular supplies
• A backup pair of underwear or leggings
• A small cosmetic bag to keep everything organized

Having this kit with you creates peace of mind wherever you go. It takes up very little space, but it can completely change how you feel on every trip.

What That 2020 Moment Taught Me

Forgetting my supplies taught me something important. Preparation builds confidence, but the ability to improvise builds strength. You learn quickly that you are far more capable than you ever gave yourself credit for.

That moment also made me committed to helping others feel prepared. Because no one should feel alone in that kind of panic. You deserve to feel confident, supported, and ready for anything.

And if you ever forget something again, remember this. You can figure it out, you can adapt. and you will get through it.

A Final Reminder

Traveling with an ostomy does not have to be stressful. You are not fragile. You are not limited. With the right preparation and the right mindset, you can go anywhere you want to go.

And if something goes wrong, you will handle it just like you have handled everything else. With strength. With grace. And with more resilience than you even realize.
