Traveling with an Ostomy: My Best Tips for Confident Adventures
You Can Travel Confidently with an Ostomy
When I was first adjusting to life with my colostomy, one of my biggest worries was travel. How would airport security work? What if my supplies leaked or I ran out while away from home?
Almost 10 years later, I can tell you with complete honesty, traveling with an ostomy is absolutely possible. You just need a little planning, a touch of confidence, and the right mindset.
In this post, I’m sharing my personal ostomy travel tips, what I’ve learned through experience so you can feel calm, prepared, and ready for adventure.
At the Airport: What to Expect at Security
TSA can feel intimidating the first time you travel with an ostomy bag. But here’s the truth: I’ve flown countless times and have never had a serious issue.
Only once did an agent do a light pat-down after I simply told them, “I have a colostomy bag.” They nodded, checked gently, and that was it. No embarrassment, no awkwardness, no alarms going off.
Tip: You can carry a TSA notification card or a doctor’s note if that gives you extra peace of mind, but most agents are trained and respectful.
Packing Smart: Your “Just-in-Case” Kit
Here’s what I never leave home without my little travel essentials pouch. It lives in my purse and goes everywhere with me:
1–2 extra ostomy bags
A flange (or wafer)
A few small disposal bags (I call them my “doggy bags”)
Skin barrier wipes or strips
Hand wipes or sanitizer
This small kit ensures I can handle anything while traveling from unexpected leaks to supply emergencies.
In my checked luggage, I pack extras: more flanges, pouches, and accessories than I think I’ll need. Trust me, you’ll never regret overpacking ostomy supplies.
Dress for Comfort (and Confidence)
When I travel, I prioritize comfort and movement. Soft, stretchy yoga pants are my go-to for flights. They sit smoothly around my stoma without irritation.
I also love light layers, an oversized sweater, a flowy top, or a long cardigan pieces that make me feel both cozy and chic. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort!
Bonus tip: Pack an extra outfit in your carry-on just in case of spills or mishaps. You’ll feel more relaxed knowing you’re covered.
Mindset: Don’t Let Fear Keep You Grounded
The biggest lesson I’ve learned? My ostomy doesn’t define or limit me it’s simply a part of my story. Once I stopped worrying about what could go wrong and started focusing on the memories I could create, travel became fun again.
You deserve to see the world. Don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back from adventures that fill your soul.
