The Best Skincare Routine for Women Over 50: How to Love the Skin You’re In (Naturally)
Because aging is a privilege and glowing skin never goes out of style.
The Beauty Shift After 50
If you’re like me, you’ve probably noticed your skin doesn’t respond quite the same way it used to. What worked in your 30s and 40s may suddenly feel too harsh or simply ineffective. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just your skin evolving along with you.
I had a complete hysterectomy at 44, and it completely changed how I viewed beauty and wellness. Overnight, my hormones shifted, my skin became drier, and I noticed fine lines forming faster than before. Back then, I didn’t realize how much our hormones play into the way our skin looks and feels, not just in our 40s, but well into our 50s and beyond.
Now, a decade later, I’m 54 and have learned how to work with my body, not against it. I’ve been on estrogen HRT since my surgery, and just recently added a small amount of testosterone to support energy, muscle tone, and overall well-being. Since I had a total hysterectomy, I don’t use progesterone, my doctor and I focus on what my body truly needs.
I also apply a tiny amount of estrogen cream to my face once a week, right alongside my favorite clean beauty products. It’s been a game-changer for elasticity, hydration, and that natural glow we all want to keep as we age.
Aging truly is a privilege. And when we take care of our hormones, our skin, and our mindset, the glow returns inside and out.
What Really Happens to Skin After 50
Here’s what’s going on beneath the surface:
Estrogen decline slows collagen production, leading to less firmness and bounce.
Cell turnover slows, leaving skin looking dull or uneven.
Moisture retention drops, which can cause dryness or irritation.
Sun exposure and stress accelerate visible aging.
I learned firsthand that addressing these shifts isn’t just about topical skincare, it’s about supporting your hormones, your skin barrier, and your confidence. The combination of clean beauty, balanced hormones, and consistency has helped me maintain that smooth, hydrated glow that used to feel impossible.
My Hormone Story: What I’ve Learned About Skin and Balance
After my hysterectomy, I felt like my body wasn’t my own for a while. I didn’t just want to feel “young” again, I wanted to feel balanced.
That’s when I started working with my doctor on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT). For me, the results have been life-changing, more energy, better sleep, improved mood, and yes, noticeable changes in my skin tone and texture.
I’ve been using estrogen therapy for years, and recently added a small dose of testosterone to further support energy and vitality. Since I had a complete hysterectomy, I don’t take progesterone, and everything is monitored closely by my healthcare provider.
Adding a small amount of topical estrogen cream once a week to my face has become part of my self-care ritual. I apply it in the evening after cleansing and before moisturizer, it supports collagen, hydration, and helps restore that healthy skin barrier that naturally weakens with age.
I always say: listen to your body, talk to your doctor, and find what works for you. There’s no shame in using science and self-care together.
My Clean Beauty Routine for Mature Skin
Over the years, I’ve learned that clean ingredients matter. Harsh chemicals can do more harm than good, especially when your skin is thinner and more sensitive. Here’s my exact skincare routine that’s worked wonders for me at 54:
Morning Routine
Gentle Cleanser – Start with something mild that doesn’t strip your skin.
Youth Activating Serum – Smooths texture and supports collagen renewal.
Youth Sculpting Wands – My “better than Botox” ritual. I use them daily to lift, tone, and increase circulation.
Moisturizer with SPF – Non-negotiable for protecting your skin barrier and preventing new spots or lines.
Evening Routine
Double Cleanse – Remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities from the day.
Eye Cream – Hydrates and brightens the delicate under-eye area.
Vitamin C Serum – My glow secret. It evens tone and supports collagen while I sleep.
Rich Night Cream – Locks in moisture and leaves my skin soft by morning.
Estrogen Cream (1x per week) – I apply it after cleansing and before night cream. It helps maintain elasticity and hydration.
What Ingredients to Look For After 50
When shopping for skincare, ingredients matter just as much as the products themselves. Look for these:
Vitamin C: Brightens and supports collagen production.
Peptides: Help rebuild firmness and elasticity.
Hyaluronic Acid: Deep hydration for dry or thinning skin.
Niacinamide: Soothes redness and strengthens your skin barrier.
SPF: Every. Single. Day.
Simple, clean formulations can make all the difference. And remember, consistency beats perfection.

Aging Gracefully, Not Perfectly
At 54, I’ve realized aging well isn’t about fighting the process it’s about flowing with it. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s radiance, peace, and confidence in who you are becoming.
