Mastering Ostomy Leaks: Tips, Tales, and Triumphs

Today, we're delving into a topic that's close to every ostomate's heart - managing those unexpected ostomy leaks. In collaboration with Hollister Incorporated, I'm excited to share practical insights and advice on handling and preventing leaks.

To complement this blog post, Hollister and I have created an insightful video on managing ostomy leaks. You can watch it right here:

First, let me share a personal incident that inspired this discussion.

The Restaurant Incident: A Humbling Experience

Picture this: I was having lunch with someone I had recently met. As our meal neared its end, an unsettling odor caught my attention.  Yup exactly what you are thinking it is…. As we decided to snap a selfie before parting ways, I stood up, glanced down, and what I saw left me mortified - stool on my foot. It was a moment of sheer embarrassment.

Rushing to the restaurant's basement restroom via an elevator, I discovered I was leaking through my pouch cover, causing it to be everywhere - on my dress, my leg, my foot. It was a messy predicament. Adding to the chaos, I had forgotten to carry scissors, and my pouch was cut-to-fit. Improvising under such circumstances wasn't a pretty sight.

By the time I returned to the table to settle the bill, my friend had already paid and left for work. It was one of the most humiliating moments of my life. Upon explaining the situation to her over the phone, she responded with understanding and encouraged me to share this story because leaks happen, and no one should feel alone.

In the event that you encounter a similar situation, here are some valuable tips to help you effectively manage ostomy leaks:

1. Be Prepared: Learn from my experience. Always carry necessary supplies in your purse, including a pre-cut pouch, just in case you forget scissors.

2. Accessorize Accordingly: If you use barrier rings or strips to improve pouch fit, ensure you have these accessories with you.

3. Pack Spare Clothes: For added peace of mind, consider carrying an extra set of clothes in a bag. Preparedness is your best friend.

4. Adapt to Body Changes: Understand that changes in your body, such as weight fluctuations, may necessitate adjustments to your ostomy appliance.

5. Correct Application: When applying your skin barrier, make sure it covers the entire area where your skin and stoma meet. No skin should be visible between the skin barrier and your stoma.

6. Mental Resilience: Mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of leaks. Accept that it can happen, and remember, it's okay. Clean up, regroup, and continue your day. It's all part of the emotional journey that accompanies life with an ostomy.
