Ostomy Life

You Are Not Alone
in Any of This.

Not in the diagnosis. Not in the fear. Not in figuring out who you are on the other side.

I have been exactly where you are. The shock, the grief, the quiet question of whether life can still be full and beautiful and yours. It can. I promise you it can. And you do not have to figure it out alone.

A Message From LeeAnne

The Bag Does Not
Define You.

When I found out I might need an ostomy, I told my doctor not to put me in a bag. I said it so many times he had to sit me down and remind me that his job was to save my life. He was right.

When I woke up from surgery everything was different. My body was different. The way I moved through the world was different. And for a while I was not sure who I was anymore.

What I know now that I did not know then is that an ostomy does not take your life away. For so many of us it gives it back.

I started talking publicly about ostomy life because I could not find anyone who looked like me and sounded like me doing it. I wanted someone to tell me it was going to be okay. So I became that person for someone else. And now more than ten years later I am still here, still talking, still showing up because this community is one of the most extraordinary groups of people I have ever had the privilege of belonging to.

Welcome. You found us. You are home.

Meet Ivan

The Name I Gave the Thing
That Saved My Life.

I named my ostomy Ivan. It felt important to give it a name, to make it something I could talk to and talk about and eventually make peace with. Ivan has been with me for more than ten years now and I would not be here without him.

God left me here to do some work. I was not going to let a bag stop me from doing it.

The diagnosis came in 2015. Cancer. The surgery followed and when I woke up my body was permanently changed. I had all the feelings you are probably having right now. Fear. Grief. Anger. The quiet terror of wondering if anyone would ever see me as whole again.

What I did not expect was the freedom. The freedom to stop pretending I was okay when I was not. The freedom to talk about hard things out loud. The freedom to build a community around honesty instead of hiding.

In 2017 I competed at the America Fitness Weekend in Las Vegas with Ivan. I walked out on that stage in a costume with wings, hit my pose, and when the audience stood up I completely fell apart. Not because I had overcome something. But because every single person in that room stood up for everyone who has ever felt like their body made them less than. That moment was not mine. It belonged to all of us.

That is what this community is. We stand up for each other. Every single time.
