Why I Named My Stoma
When I first heard the idea of naming my stoma, I honestly laughed! I thought, why would I name something like that? But it turned out to be one of the most helpful things I’ve ever done.
Yes, your stoma makes noises. Yes, it sometimes rumbles or surprises you at the most inconvenient moments. But naming it takes away some of the stress and makes it easier to talk about and even laugh about!
Mine is named Ivan.
And Ivan has personality! When I’m in a meeting or in an elevator and he decides to make noise, I just smile and say, “Oh, that’s just Ivan!” It always lightens the moment and helps me (and everyone else) laugh instead of feeling awkward.
You’re Not Alone!
After connecting with so many incredible people in the ostomy community, I realized that I’m definitely not the only one!
Here are just a few of the names people have shared with me:
Rosie – because it makes people smile!
Wendy (Windy) – for obvious reasons!
Daisy – because it’s cheerful and lighthearted!
Frick or Frack – because sometimes you just need a laugh!
There’s something special about naming your stoma. It’s a way to separate it from yourself, to take away the clinical side, and to add a little joy back into the journey.
Why It Helps
Naming your stoma does more than make people laugh, it helps you emotionally adjust and build confidence!
It helps you accept it. Naming your stoma makes it feel less clinical and more personal.
It brings lightness to the journey. Humor can make hard moments easier.
It helps you talk about it more openly. Once it has a name, it’s easier to share and connect with others.
It reminds you you’re still you. You can still be funny, confident, and fully yourself!
How to Pick a Name
There’s no wrong way to name your stoma, just pick something that feels like you!
Here are a few fun ideas to get started:
Go with something that makes you laugh every time you say it.
Pick a name that represents strength, positivity, or humor.
Think about your favorite characters, inside jokes, or even song lyrics!
It’s your story, and your stoma is a part of it. Make it something you can smile about.
Final Thought
Naming my stoma helped me find humor in something that once felt scary. It gave me a way to talk about it, to laugh, and to remind myself that I’m still in control of my story.
Whether yours is named Ivan, Rosie, or something totally unique, give it a name that brings you joy because a little laughter can make all the difference!
